Day 1 of 7, a study on trusting God with your money.
I told you a couple weeks ago that this devotional habit of mine might turn into something bigger someday, and that I'd say so plainly when it did. Here it is. Seven mornings, one theme: what it actually looks like to trust God with money in this particular season, when the number in the account matters more than it ever has and I have less control over it than I used to.
We start with the hardest one for me. Contentment.
"Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you."
Hebrews 13:5
Paul wrote that a chapter after saying, in his own life, "I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation." Learned. Not born with. Learned, the same way I'm still learning it at sixty-something, checking my account balance more than I'd like to admit.
Here's what I noticed this week. My contentment has been quietly attached to the number instead of to the promise underneath it. The verse doesn't say God will leave when the number gets smaller than I'd like. It says he won't. That's the whole case, and I keep needing to hear it stated that plainly.
Today's Question
Where is your contentment actually anchored this week, the number or the promise?
A Short Prayer
Lord, you know exactly what's in my account and exactly what's in my heart about it. Teach me to be as content with your presence as I want to be with a bigger number. Amen.
God bless,
Paul
