Well Done Isn't Said at the Retirement Party

Day 7 of 7, closing this study on purpose after the paycheck.

They gave me a nice speech at my retirement party and a plaque that's still in a box somewhere I haven't unpacked. I appreciated it, and it also wasn't, if I'm honest, the review I actually care about receiving someday.

"His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!'"

Matthew 25:21

Notice what earns that line in the parable. Not size. Not title. Faithfulness with a few things. My thirty-two years in an office was a big assignment by the world's measure, and whatever I do with my Tuesday mornings at the food pantry now is a small one by that same measure. The parable doesn't grade on that scale at all. It's watching for faithfulness with whatever's actually been entrusted, big or small, and the well done at the end doesn't care which size it was attached to.

That's the review I'm actually working toward this whole study. Not a plaque. A "well done" that has nothing to do with a job title.

If this study was useful, I've got two more in the works, on different pieces of this same season. I'll say when they're ready.

Today's Question

What faithfulness with a small thing this week might matter more than you're giving it credit for?

A Short Prayer

Lord, I want the well done that has nothing to do with a job title or a plaque. Let me be faithful with whatever's small in front of me today. Amen.

God bless,
Paul
