Made Before the Job Title

Day 1 of 7, a study on purpose after the paycheck.

Thirty-two years I introduced myself with a job title attached. Somebody would ask what I did, and I had an answer ready before they finished the question. I don't have that answer ready anymore, and I noticed this year how much of my sense of purpose had quietly been borrowed from that title the whole time.

"For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."

Ephesians 2:10

"Prepared in advance" is the phrase that stopped me. Whatever good work I was made for, God prepared it before I ever had a career to retire from. The job wasn't the purpose. It was one place the purpose happened to show up for a few decades. If the purpose had a start date before the job, it's reasonable to think it doesn't have an end date tied to the job either.

I'm spending this week's study trying to find where that purpose is showing up now that the title's gone.

Today's Question

What part of your purpose do you suspect was never actually attached to your job title in the first place?

A Short Prayer

God, thank you for preparing good work for me before I ever had a résumé. Show me where that work is now that the title's gone. Amen.

God bless,
Paul
