Numbering My Days on Purpose

Day 6 of 7, a study on aging without shrinking.

For years I avoided doing the actual math on how many days I might statistically have left. It felt morbid, and honestly a little pointless, since none of us know the real number anyway. This year I started doing the math on purpose instead of avoiding it, and it landed differently than I expected.

"Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom."

Psalm 90:12

Moses isn't asking for the number so he can dread it. He's asking for it so wisdom shows up on the other side of the counting. There's a version of numbering your days that ends in fear, and there's a version that ends in a heart of wisdom, and the difference isn't the math. It's whether the counting is done with God or done alone in the dark at 2 a.m., which is where I usually used to do it.

I still don't know my actual number. But I've stopped avoiding the question, and something has actually gotten wiser in me for having asked it honestly.

Today's Question

What would change about today if you actually let yourself number it, on purpose, with God?

A Short Prayer

Lord, teach me to number my days honestly, with you, so I gain wisdom instead of fear. Make today count for something real. Amen.

God bless,
Paul
